Week 9 - MKTG 3347 - What Color Is Your Parachute?
Chapter 1.
A meaningful job and career full of success is what most individuals strive for; with many job opportunities, some may find themselves struggling in the workforce and with their own goals. "What Color Is Your Parachute" by Richard N. Bolles is a guide to help those discover certain habits they should obtain to find happiness and feel self-accomplished.
The workforce is full of constant changes for example AI is a rising industry and people have assumed that the use of robots will eliminate jobs. But instead, it is believed that AI will open up job opportunities for many different industries. Therefore, instead of being opposed to rising changes in industries, there should be some openness to what opportunities could be opened. Although the unemployment rate is currently standing at 3.8% compared to 13.2% in 2020 (Civilian Unemployment Rate, 2019) there are still complications for some. They may have a great skill set or have a degree but are still unable to find a job. The book states that individuals should take charge of how they present themselves to recruiters. "By following six things to double their chances of finding a new job.
- Update your job search techniques
- Improve your professional networking skills and connections.
- Make a comprehensive inventory of the job skills you can claim proficiency in with confidence.
- Create a targeted resume for each position
- Set concrete goals and be proactive about achieving them.
- Ask for support from family, friends, and mental health or therapeutic resources when you need it."(Richard Bolles, 2022)
The book also states that individuals should have self-compassion and focus on building their confidence. The job searching process is not easy and can be overwhelming; being rejected should not be taken as a setback instead should be looked at as an opportunity to learn about oneself or other more suitable opportunities.
